How to Costume a CAST in COVID

How do you costume the cast of a virtual production? That was the challenge addressed recently by CAST Costume Designer, Rex Booth.

Rex started by talking with the director for each of CAST’s fall shows and developed a specific costume plot that would work for each play. The idea was to focus on a costume that could be seen from the waist up, as that’s all that will be visible in the recorded performances. Rex did not have measurements, so he had to use his best judgment as to which outfits would work with which actor. Rex then pulled all the costumes from the CAST wardrobe closet and meticulously labeled them.

Bill McGlynn, CAST Program Director, and Kathy Simon, CAST Program Manager, delivered each performer's costume to their house. Safety pins were included, which could be used to make adjustments if needed. After the costumes were delivered, the actors were instructed to put their costumes on for a rehearsal. This allowed Rex to review the costume "on-air" to ensure he liked how everything looked.
